A Class Designed to Help You Stay Strong, Steady and Independent
As we get older, it's quite normal to notice changes in our strength and balance.
You might find that getting out of a low chair takes a little more effort, you're not quite as confident walking on uneven ground, or you've started avoiding certain activities because you're worried about falling.
Sometimes these changes happen gradually, and it's only when we stop to think about them that we realise how much they're affecting our day-to-day lives.
The good news is that strength and balance can improve with the right exercises and support.
Our classes focus on helping you:
- Improve your leg strength, making everyday activities such as standing up, walking and climbing stairs easier.
- Improve your balance and stability, helping you feel steadier on your feet.
- Reduce your risk of falling, by working on the strength, balance and reactions needed to stay upright.
- Build your confidence, particularly if you've experienced a fall or have started worrying about your balance.
- Maintain your mobility and independence, so you can keep doing the things you enjoy.
And, just as importantly, we want you to enjoy coming along!
Exercise shouldn’t feel frightening or overwhelming. We want you to feel comfortable, supported and pleased with what you’re achieving.
Who Are These Classes For?
Our Strength, Balance & Falls Prevention classes may be particularly helpful if you:
- Have noticed your balance isn't quite what it used to be.
- Have experienced a fall or a few near misses.
- Feel nervous about falling, particularly when you're out and about.
- Find everyday activities such as getting out of chairs or climbing stairs more difficult.
- Have become less active and want to rebuild your strength.
- Are recovering from illness or a period of reduced mobility.
- Want to maintain your independence and confidence as you get older.
You don’t need to have had a fall to benefit from the classes.
In fact, we’d much rather help you improve your strength and balance before falling becomes a problem.
And you certainly don’t need to be fit or experienced at exercise before joining.
That’s what we’re here to help with.
What Makes Our Classes Different?
There are lots of exercise classes available, but we've designed ours specifically for people who need a little more support with their strength, balance and confidence.
A Physiotherapist and Physiotherapy Assistant at Every Class
Every session has two members of our physiotherapy team.
This means we can keep a close eye on how everyone is moving, offer support when needed and make sure exercises are being performed safely.
If you need a little more help with an exercise, someone is there to support you.
Small Classes, With a Maximum of 8 People
We deliberately keep our classes small.
We want to get to know you, understand what you’re finding difficult and help you work towards the things that are important to you.
You’re not simply another person in a large exercise class.
Exercises Adapted to You
Not everyone joining the class will have the same level of strength or balance.
Some people may need to use a chair for support, while others might be ready for more challenging exercises.
That’s absolutely fine.
We’ll adapt the exercises to suit your ability and gradually progress them as your strength, balance and confidence improve.
Individual Assessment Before You Start
Before joining, you’ll meet with one of our physiotherapists for an individual assessment.
This means we understand your starting point and can make sure the exercises are appropriate for you.
It also means that when you come into your first class, we already know you and anything you might need help with.
Building Confidence After a Fall
Having a fall can really knock your confidence.
Even if you haven't been seriously injured, it's quite understandable to feel more cautious afterwards.
You might start avoiding longer walks, become nervous about going out on your own or find yourself holding onto things around the house.
The problem is that doing less often leads to becoming weaker, which can make balance and mobility more difficult.
We want to help break that cycle.
Our classes give you the opportunity to work on your strength and balance in a supportive environment, gradually rebuilding your confidence as you improve.
It's not about pushing you to do things you're uncomfortable with.
It's about helping you become stronger and steadier, one step at a time.
What to Expect in Your First Class
We know joining a new exercise class can feel a little daunting, particularly if you're worried about your balance.
But please don't worry.
Before you start, we'll already have met you at your Initial Assessment and have a good understanding of your strength, balance and mobility.
Your physiotherapist will guide you through the exercises, with support from our physiotherapy assistant whenever needed.
We'll use a range of exercises designed to improve your leg strength, balance, coordination and confidence with everyday movement.
Some exercises may be performed sitting down, while others will involve standing or moving around, with support available where needed.
And don't worry about what anyone else is doing.
Everyone will be working at their own level.
As you become stronger and more confident, we'll gradually build things up.
Our aim is for you to enjoy the class, feel comfortable with the exercises and begin noticing improvements in your everyday life.
